Captioning and Transcription

Captioning or Transcription Services

Your approach to captioning online video will likely depend on a number of factors, including the amount of video you need to caption, the method you will use to deliver your video to the consumer, the skills and tools you have at hand, and of course time and money. Should you choose to outsource your captioning or transcription project, here's what you can expect.

Captioning Service

You upload your video (or audio) file to a captioning service, and they provide you with synchronized, human-proofed captions, ready for publication. The captions are available in any format you specify and there is no additional charge to obtain captions in multiple formats. There is a 3-4 business day turnaround time. The cost for the service ranges from $1.00 - $2.65 per minute of media.

This is certainly the easiest way to caption video, and recommended for video longer than 15 minutes, with multiple speakers, dense dialogue, or other complex factors.

Transcription Service

If all you need is a transcript, you may consider a transcription service.

The process is similar to that described above, except for the product and the cost. You receive only a clean text transcript of your media's audio track. The cost difference can be significant, with rates starting at $1.00 per minute of media.

This is a good way to obtain a transcript to synchronize in-house or upload directly to YouTube for synchronization.
